BURGESSES' ASSOCIATION.
ST. MARTINS SOCIAL. The annual social of the St. Martins Burgesses' Association was held at Buxton's Nursery last evening. There was a very large* gathering of the resi dents of the district, presided over by Mr J. W. Hunter, chairman of the association. The hall, which was kindly lent by Mr A. W. Buxton, was very tastefully decorated with geraniums, ferns, and other pot plants from the nursery. During the evening musical and other items were, contributed by Misses Wilson, Barber, Hartle, B. Watkins, K. Tench, F. Watkins, Saunders;; Mrs Edgintou, and Messrs Watts, Mitchell, Lind, Smith, and Master Edgintou, after which supper was served, and then a progressive euchre contest was held. Pot plants were presented to the winners of the contest by Mr Buxton. Mr J. McCombs addressed the gathering and congratulated the association upon the success of the function. He emphasised the value of the association because it tried to make the people take an interest in local affairs. The Hon. .1. Barr, M.L.C., spoke in
somewhat similar terms, and-Mr-Ander-son made a few remarks on the progress of the borough. Mr .6. Scott, chairman of the Heathcote County Council, spoke on behalf of the council and urged the association to help the council as much as possible, especially with regard: to the outstanding rates);which amounted to something like £6OO. The function terminated, with a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr A. W. Buxton, who had so generously provided the decorations and the building;
