SUMNER NOTES.
SUMNER GALA. A meeting of the committee of the last Sumner Gala was held in the Town Hall last night, the Mayor presiding over a full attendance. The balancesheet, as presented, was adopted and showed a credit balance of £7 3/11. It was decided that if there was a gala held in aid of the Patriotic Fund, to hand the amount over to that committee, otherwise the amount would be handed to the Mayor of Christchurch for the Patriotic Fund. The secretary was granted the sum qf £2 2/- for his services; CANTERBURY PATRIOTIC FUND. The meeting of the representatives of the various sports bodies in Sumner called by the Mayor was held last night. A letter was received from the secretary of the Patriotic Fund giving particulars in regard to raising funds. Several suggestions were put forward for the holding of a gala in aid of the fund, and after considerable discussion Mr H. Buttle moved the following resolution, which was carried:—"That the meeting stand adjourned until the Mayor considers it necessary to call another meeting.'' A "QUIET DAY." In connection with the Christchurch Methodist Ministers' Association, a '' Quiet Day'' was held at Sumner on Monday last. Some 25 ministers came down in the morning, and all but a few remained throughout the day. The weather was perfect, and the charms of Sumner were much appreciated by the visitors. The morning session was entirely devotional, and was found to be greatly helpful to all present. The afternoon was devoted tcr a most interesting discussion of the subject "The Church in Relation to Social Questions." Tea was/ provided by the Ladies' Guild at the residence of Mrs Harold Buttle, and at the close of a very pleasant social function the Rev. W. A. Sinclair returned thanks for the generous hospitality shown. In the evening a public meeting was held, the Rev. W. J. Williams in the chair. Interesting and instructive addresses were given by the Revs. B. Turtson and P. H. Knight, B.A. Two anthems were sung by the choir, and two solos were rendered by Miss Johnson and the Rev. A. Mitchell. A collection was taken up for the Blanket Fund for the Poor of Britain and Belgium.
