NEWS IN BRIEF.
An inquest was held, last evening by Mr 11. W. Bishop, S.M., touching the death of Peter Anderson, who died suddenly at Merivale yesterday morning. The Coroner found that death was due to- heart disease. Mr C. W. Hervey, accountant, auditor, and secretary, notifies that he is prepared to act for any member of the Expeditionary Force during his absence" from the Dominion free of any cost whatever. Miss Thurston acknowledges the receipt of the following donations to the Ambulance Equipment Fund: —Per Miss Hood, £1 9/6; Mrs Appleby, £1 2/6; Nurse Houston, 10/-; Mr J. D. Booth, bandages and garments, etc. The following additions to the Openair Home Fund are acknowledged:— Per Rev. Mr A. Liversedge: Richmond Working, Men's Club £5, Mrs Hart 5/-. Additional Riccarton. collections (per Mesdames Keys and Wood) 10/-. Per Misses Ponder and Caverliill £1 10/o. The next concert of the Christchurch Orpheus Society will be held in the Choral Hall on Tuesday next, September 1. Pattison's cantata, "Robin Hood," will occupy the first part of the programme, and the second part will consist of solos by Mrs C. H. Taylor and Messrs T. Barnes, J. Worgan, and C. H. Taylor, Kipling's '' Recessional,'' "The Deathless Army,?' "The Sisters of the Sea,'' etc. At a sitting of the Police Court this morning, before Messrs W. W. Tanner and C. H. A. T. Opie, J.P.'s, a boy of 15 appeared on remand, charged with incest. He was committed to. the Supreme Court for trial. . Stanley Austin Joseph Suckling, also on remand, appeared, charged with criminal assault on the same girl, eight years of age. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
To-morrow evening a public farewell will be given at Lyttelton in honour of those who have volunteered for service in the Expeditionary Force. About twenty men have left from Lyttelton to serve their king and country. Some are in the camp at Addington, some are in the first contingent which left Wellington in the Moeraki and Monowai, two (artillerymen) are at the Concentration Camp at Palmerston North, while the rest are made up of naval reserves. Tomorrow night's function willntake the form of a social evening, and will be held in the Excelsior Hall.
