FEARFUL DEATH ROLL.
BLAZE IN A MINE.
RESCUE WORK ABANDONED.

All rescue work at the F'ernie coal mine, Hillcrest, Alberta, has been abandoned owing to the outbreak of fire.
The total death roll is 197. Sixty bodies have been recovered, many mangled beyond recognition. The whole male population of the town of Hillcrest has been wiped out, and 200 homes are in mourning. Fire-damp exploded in the 1200 foot level, burying scores of miners beneath a fall of coal, and suffocating others. Some were found standing pick in hand as if about to begin work.
The disaster is the worst in the history of Canadian coal mining.
