Girl Athletes Give Display
SHOW OF COLOURS VIRILITY AND GRACE The fourth annual sports meeting of the Auckland Girls’ Athletic Association was staged at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon. At each successive fixture the great work that the association is doing in fostering athletic sports among Auckland girls becomes more noticeable. The displays of athletic events and massed drill and marching which the large crowd watched on Saturday afternoon were a revelation of the progress which has marked the association’s activities since its inception. r the onlooker it was a scene of sheer delight. Supple, graceful, well-formed girls, clad in costumes of vivid and attractive colours, entered into both massed and team events with the utmost enthusiasm. Virility and girlish zest were seen on all sides, and the effects lent by the bright and artistic team uniforms caused one to think of the pageantry which marked the recreations of a bygone era. The introduction of eurythmics demonstrated the girls’ versatility, and the massed effect was most spectacular. They went through the classic movements of this section with the grace of young Naiads and the crowd was charmed, as its warm applause indicated. In physical drill and marching the girls excelled themselves. Alertness, precision of movement, discipline and military snap rapidly dispelled all prehistoric notions that the sterner sex alone is capable of such work. The display reflected great credit on Miss E. W. S. Crammond, physical director of the Y.W.C.A., who coached the girls in this section.
The Grand Challenge Cup presented by the directors of the New Zealand “Herald” to the team gaining highest aggregate points was won for the fourth year in succession by the Presbyterian Bible Class Union, the runnersup being Howard Abbott Limited, who won the Runners-up Cup, presented by Mr. W. S. Pratt.
