LABOUR DAY SPORTS

HEAVY TRACK AT THE DOMAIN KEEN ATHLETIC CONTESTS A heavy track militated against fast j times at the Labour Day sports organised by the Trades Hall trustees, held at the Domain yesterday. .Bright sunshine, after heavy rain, attracted several thousand people to . the meeting, which produced keen contests in both running and cycling.. j The open 100 yards dash was won ; for the second year in succession by ! T. K. Cambie, off the 3yd mark. The i Auckland sprint champion, A. J. Elliott, was beaten into second place by inches. I according to the judges, though it j certainly appeared to many that .the i title-holder's body-thrust gained him • the verdict. In the 220yds and 440yds, B. ICerr-Taylor showed good form, gaining second and first places respectively. Among the cyclists. F. W. Restall was outstanding, taking the mile and gaining second place in the sprint event. Prominent among the spectators was Mr. H. E. Holland, leader of the Labour Party, and Labour members °f Auckland electorates and their wives. The visitors were guests of the Trades Hall trustees at luncheon at the Domain tea kiosk. The Highland and national dancing, in which there were more than 120 competitors, attracted much attention throughout the day. It was essentially children’s day, and thousands of children spent the afternoon revelling in races, lolly scrambles, and novelty events, practically every youngster receiving some memento of the occasion.
