CHIEF DIES AT 92
FOUGHT IN WAIKATO WARS CONFISCATED LANDS The death occurred yesterday afternoon of Tu Mohi at the residence of Messrs. V. and C. Peters, Raleigh Road, Northcote, at the age of 92 years. Tu Mohi, whose European name was Eden Charles Cowell, was the son of John Cowell, a Scotsman, who married Mata, a chieftainess of the Maniapoto Apakura tribes, Waikato, and who was a close relation of King Mahuta. He is probably one of the last of the leading chiefs who fought in the Waikato wars, taking part in engagements at Rangiawahia, TJmatawiwi and Rangirlri. A 3taunch supporter of the Kingite movement, he gave allegiance to Kings Potatau, Tawhiao, Maliuta and the present King Rata. For his activity against the colonial forces, Tu Mohi’s lands were confiscated by the Government. He had a family of 15 children, four sons and five daughters surviving him. There are over 100 grandchildren. Tu Mohi will be buried in the cemetery on the mountain at Taupiri on Friday. A large number of Maoris will take part in the final obsequies.
