MODEL HIGH SCHOOL

PLAN FOR TRAINING TEACHERS AUCKLAND PROPOSAL The setting up of a model secondary school department at the Training College was advocated at the Education Board this morning by the chairman, Mr, A. Burns. The proposal was approved. Difficulty is being experienced by the board through the lack of train- | ing facilities, in obtaining teachers !to fill positions in district high schools in the country. Mr. Burns said secondary schools ! in Auckland had been asked to con- | sider allowing trainees to enter the j schools for observation. The Seddon j Memorial Technical College had been j the only one to approve the proposal. Mentioning the difficulty in gaining teachers for high schools in the pro- ; vince, Mr. Burns said that there had | been only one applicant for a posi- | lion at Putaruru. If a model school were established, students at the j Training College would have an op- | portunity to study methods of in- ! struction. ! “At present, trainees go to the sec- ; ondary departments without practical | training.” Mr. Burns said. “I have j discussed the suggestion with Mr. D. |M. Rae, principal of the Training j College, and he thought it could be carried out. The board has a cen- | tral site and it can place the sugI gestion before the Department of | Education.” I Mr. T."U. Wells feared that pupils ! at the model schools would not receive such efficient tuition. Mr. H. S. W. King regretted that Auckland’s grammar schools could not permit a measure of experience for teaching trainees. He thought a model school was needed. Auckland needed a district high school, in Mr. E. C. Banks’s view. Mr. G. Brownlee considered Auck- , land could well have another grammar school and the department could be asked to provide one in the grounds of the Training College. “I think the department realises there must be some training for secondary school teachers,” Mr. Burns said. The suggestion will be forwarded to the department.
