EXPLOSIVE IN COAL
MAN LOSES THREE FINGERS (From 'Our Own Correspondent) WAIHI, Friday. While breaking some large pieces of coal on Thursday at a boiling-down plant where he was employed, Claude Haines, 21, single, of Waihi, struck a piece of gelignite or other explosive among the coal. There was a violent explosion, and Mr. Haines had the three first fingers of his left hand blown off. He was conveyed to the Waihi Hospital.
