FIRE IN ONEHUNGA

BUILDING SOCIETY OFFICES BURNED BOROUGH BOOKS DAMAGED Fire did a considerable amount of damage at 6.30 last evening to the offices of the Onehunga Building Society in Queen Street. The outbreak occurred in a small room next to the front office and spread to the directors’ room, the walls and ceilings of both rooms being badly charred. The promptness of the brigade under Superintendent Gilbert, prevented the flames from spreading. The books and valuable documents were locked in the safe and escaped injury, but a number of old records stored in a cupboard were destroyed. It is estimated that the damage to the building will not exceed £2OO. Books and papers of the Onehunga Borough Council, whose chambers adjoin those of the Building Society, suffered considerable damage by water which found its way through the ceiling. The Building Society's premises are insured in the Xew Zealand Office for £250.
