GOVERNMENT GRANTS

NORTH AUCKLAND OBJECTS TO CHANGE IN SYSTEM AGITATION COMMENCED (From, Our Own Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Thursday. The decision of the Minister of j Public Works to alter the system of ■ allocating grants for public works is viewed with apprehension in Xorth ! Auckland. The Whangarei County Council has sent a circular to the councils urging that special meetings should be held to consider the question, with a view of protecting the interests of the ! North. A draft resolution, which it is suggested the councils should pass, accompanies the circular. The resolution states that the council can see no need for any change and views with 1 alarm the decision of the Minister to alter the system. It sets out that Xorth Auckland deserves special at- : tention in respect of back-block roads, and deplores the serious blow to land settlement and production that would follow any curtailment in grant allocations. Further, the resolution points out, the Xorth Auckland Public Works road district is more closely subdivided into holdings—32,lß2 assessments —than any other part of the Domin- : ion, and in consequence requires greater roading facilities and consideration.
