DRIVEN TO STEAL
PENNILESS YOUNG GIRL PROBATION FOR YEAR Left penniless when the man with whom she had been living in Newton was arrested as a naval deserter, Sylvia Clayton Lomas, aged 20, stole a gramophone from a city firm and pawned it. This morning at the Police Court Lomas pleaded guilty on a charge of stealing the gramophone, valued at £25, on June 15.
In the opinion of Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., who had received a report on the girl from the probation officer, she wanted looking after. She had stolen the machine and pawned it. Lomas was admitted to probation for two years. The question of restitution was left to the discretion of the probation officer.
