PUKEKOHE NOTES

The bi-monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce was held last evening, Mr. H.' J. Sumner presiding. A donation of £2 2s was made to the Franklin District Court Committee toward the cost of staging the district court at the Auckland Winter Show. In reply to representations regarding the late running of the 12.40 p.m. Pukekohe-Auckland train. tl%e district traffic manager advised that the train had only been late on two occasions during the past fortnight, but that every effort would be made to keep it to schedule in the future. The Department of Internal Affairs intimated that it would be pleased to forward 2,000 copies of the chamber’s booklet advertising Franklin to the High Commissioner for distribution. Regarding the nuisance caused by Maoris in King Street, Sergeant J. T. Cowan advised that instructions had been issued to the police that, failing ail improvement, offenders were to be prosecuted, lie suggested that the chamber, in conjunction with the Borough Council, might do good by launching some scheme to provide a hostel for Maoris in the town. The Railway Department stated that alterations to the running of certain trains would be made next month, and the chamber deferred the consideration of renewing its representations for the stopping of the 5.36 p.m. Frank-ton-Auckland train at Pukekohe. A sub-committee comprising the president, Messrs. Curd and Hosking, was appointed to conduct further inquiries regarding the establishment of a sewerage scheme for the borough. j A meeting of shopkeepers convened •by the Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce for the purpose of considering j the advisability of the holding of a shopping week at Pukekohe, was held last evening. Mr. H. J. Sumner, pre- : sident of the chamber, presided. Owing to the apathy shown by the business people, it was decided to abandon the project.
