OVERCARRIED CARGO

“CANADIAN BRITISHER” INCIDENT COMMERCE COUNCIL MEETS A letter from the Auckland agent of the Canadian National Steamships referring to the complaint made by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce that cargo of excessive quantity had been overcarried from Auckland to Wellington by the steamer Canadian Britisher, was received by the council of the chamber at its meeting yesterday. The agent explanied that in a previous letter the words, “there was nothing unusual about cargo being overcarried,” inferred that cargo which the agents had been requested to land at another port might be considered as cargo overcarried. The agent went on on confirm the statement that the cargo overcarried by the vessel was not excessive. A member of the council commented that the letter appeared to be unsatisfactory. If only 20 tons, for instance, had been overcarried it was not unusual, but if the quantity amounted to perhaps a hundred tons, then Auckland was being penalised for the company s benefit. The amount overcorried had not been stated. The secretary. Dr. E. P. Neale, reported that he had received 40 applications for the GO vacancies cn the commerce train during its tour.
