TOWN AND COUNTRY

COMMERCE CONFERENCE A FORWARD MOVE A report on the proposed provincial conference of country Chambers of Commerce, to be held on July 10 and 11, was made by the special subcommittee set up to consider the question at the meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. Mr. G. Finn stated that 15 members of the chamber had intimated their willingness to make monetary contributions toward the cost of entertaining the country delegates during their stay in Auckland. The delegates -would be taken for motor runs in the mornings, and they would be the guests of the Auckland Chamber at the monthly luncheon to be held on July 11. It was suggested by the sub-committee that country chambers should have the right to send one delegate for every 75 members or part thereof. Mr. Finn said that he thought this was a forward move. The Auckland Province was really a country on its own, apart from the rest of New Zealand. He did not mean this in any parochial spirit. There was no portion of New Zealand with greater possibilities ahead of it. There was no section of the Dominion with so much scope for advancing its own welfare, and the welfare of New Zealand as a whole. He attached a great deal of importance to this conference, in appealing to every member of the chamber to give it all the support he could. The acting-chairman, Mr. M. Stewart, said that the cost of entertainment would not be great. He agreed with what Mr. Finn had said, in that the more the chamber kept in touch with the country, the better it would be for the Dominion. Mr. A. M. Seaman moved that the expenses in connection with the entertainment of country delegates be borne by the chamber. This was agreed to. and the other recommendations of the sub-comittee were adopted.
