FIRE AND FIGHTING
TIMBER STRIKE CAUSES DISTURBANCES BATTLE WITH THE POLICE Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. Fire broke out in the timber yards of Smith Bros, at Mascot an hour after the yards had been left unwatched for the first time for some weeks past. The brigades prevented the blaze from spreading, and only about £SOO worth of damage was done. It Is believed that a deliberate attempt was made to burn the timber. At Newtown a fight accurred when policemen and detectives went to the assistance of a timber worker who was being attacked by strikers or their sympathisers. Policemen who were protecting the worker in a timber yards noticed some men acting suspiciously. Believing that they were members of the gang engaged in assaulting the workers, the police summoned aid by wireless. When a sudden rush was made on the defenceless workers the police and their reserves intervened and a melee followed. One constable was injured. Eventually the police were victorious. Two men were arrested. Mr. Corke, secretary of the Timber Merchants’ Association, declares that the attacks on volunteer workers are organised.
