RIOTOUS TRAM TRIP
WRANGLE OVER FARES MEN FINED £3 EACH A journey in a Ponsonby trumcar was a riotous event for two workmen, George Riley and J. Peckham. Both men had been drinking. This morning, in the Police Court, Peckham was charged with using obscene language and with assault. The allegation against Riley was that he used insulting language. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that there had been a dispute over fares. Drink was the trouble of both men. So rowdy were they on a crowded car that the motorman kept a look-oui for a constable. Peckham was fined £3 for using obscene language and was convicted and discharged for his other offence. Riley’s language cost him £3, too
