PAGANELLI’S WIN

RACING AT TRENTHAM REVIEWED CONCENTRATE’S ST. LEGER (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON. Saturday. With perfect weather, the Wellington autumn meeting drew a fair attendance, but the totalisator receipts were down £3,944, a fall from £57,866 to £53,922, High-Weight Handicap The High-Weight Handicap was a fairly even betting race. Mister Gamp carried more than Vivo and Elicit. Aberfeldy went to the front as soon as the field was released, and led all the way. Along the back Vivo and Glena Bay were at the rea.r, Glena Bay’s rider having lost a stirrup. The pace was slow. several of the runners being under a strong pull. Aberfeldy was first to turn for home, and was at onco challenged by Elicit. Break o’ Bay and Mister Gamp. Elicit and Aberfeldy passed the post almost on terms and Aberfeldy won through getting in the last stride, there being only a head between them. Break o’ Day was third, two lengths away, and Mister Gamp close up fourth. Mister Gamp looked rather burly and should be better for the race, while Aberfeldy also will be improved. N.Z. St. Leger Stakes

Backers went very heavily for Red Heckle in the New Zealand St. Leger,

and all the others were at good prices, i Toxeuma went f » the front, and led j through the straight and along the j back under a strong pull. High j faultin’ and Red Heckle were close j behind him. and the field was not at j all strung out. Between the five and j four furlong posts Toxeuma’s rider let | him go, and he »>on put 'a big break | on the field. He entered the straight several lengths clear., but Concentrate then comnknced a great .run, and, finely handled by B. H. Morris, got up to win by a head. The favourite, Red Heckle, was third, five lengths away, and High faultin’ was another six lengths away. Plunket Nursery The big field for the Plunket NiJ - sery got away in fairly good line, and Vaipre, beginning fast, was soon over near the rails in a leading position. I Vaipre, Coon Song and Tea Queen were among those prominent on to the j course proper, but Eaglet came j through and soon had command. A I win for the Aucklander looked cer- ! tain, till Disorder came with a great j late run, and in a sterling finish got up in time to dead-heat with Eaglet. Nigh Had was two lengths away third, and Crash fourth, with Duellona, Oral, Gay Duke, Ex Dono, Hunting Boy and Hunting Cry all close up. The performance of each of the dead-heaters was good, as they came from well back, especially Distorder. Vaipre, Hunting Boy and Gay Duke all look j likely to be heard of soon. Thompson Handicap S The Thompson Handicap was a great race. Tlio Aucklanders, Paganelli and Pegaway were the favourites, and both I ran fine races. Paganelli was in front soon after the field, liad been re- | leased, and nearing the half-mile he was in front from Lysander, Bright Glow, Royal Duke, Star Area, Pegaway, White fang and Ruanui. The order did not undergo any important change in the run to the straight. Paganelli was definitely in command at the distance, where Brigl % Glow looked to have a good chance of beating him, and Pegaway was coming fast on the rails. Paganelli stayed on well enough to win by half a length from Bright Glow, who boat Pegaway by half u length. Rape was a fair fourth, and then came .sunder, White Pang, Star Area, Kuuiui, Joy Bird, Rapine and Amor. Rapier finished so well that he is clearly in great order. Joy King received a bad passage, Royal Duke could not stay, and Lysander ran prominently till well into the straight and then stopped quickly. Late scratchings were: Silver Paper, 11.20; Count Cavou.r, 12.25; and In the Shade, 12.20. N.l. Challenge Stakes While Reremoana was a good favourite for the North Island Challenge Stakes, Gay Ballerina, too, was well backed. The two-year-old soon hit the front, and led on to the straight from Equitant and Commendation, Gascony and Reremoana. Here Gay Ballerina slipped away and Reremoana made a brave effort to reduce the big gap, but failed by two lengths. Gascony was three lengths away third and Commendation fourth. Gay Ballerina is much improved since last seen here, and won very decisively. Reremoana went a great race, but had too much ground to make up in the straight, and Commendation should soon win. Silverstream Handicap The Warden, Disranlc and Roi de Val were favourites for the Silverstream Handicap. Zippor began well | from the rails, and soon took up the running from Goodwill, The Warden, Archieval and Fallow. The order was much the same in the run to the straight, where Zippor was going well, tie came away in the run home, and was slowing down again when he passed the post, a length ahead of Goodwill. Two and a-half lengths away came Atholspear, just in front of Stanchion, Rory Mor, Paper Boy and Fullmark. Zippor won so well that it is difficult to say what extra weight would have beaten him. Archieval ran a fair race and Stanchion did well under his weight. Railway Handicap

The Railway Handicap did not draw a good field, and Moa Bird wound up a better favourite than Freehold, with Cimabue well backed and Keddar at a good price. There was a rush for position in the early stages, and Cimshue was one of the leaders at the sweep on to the straight, where Keddar and Great Charter also were showing up. Keddar finished too well for the others, and won by a length from Freehold, who came with a good late run, and cut Cimabue out of second money. Great Charter was a fair fourth and Kilbronsyth and Millais next. Moa Bird drew the rails and was cut back early in the race. Cimabue will be improved by the run. Tinakori Handicap As 16 contested the Tinakori Handicap, luck in the running had something to do with the positions of several runners, but nothing to do with the success of Valuation, who wound up favourite, much better backed than Arikinui. Arikinui and Valuation botn drew wide out at the barrier, but Arikinui was first to turn for home. Valuation came through at the false rail and won with the most ridiculous ease l»v a length from Noteworthy and Arrow Boy, who dead-heated, while Quantum finished close up. Arikinui bad to be bustled in the early part of the race and could not run on, but ft would have taken a. good one to beat Valuation. Tourist bolted two rounds and was withdrawn from the race. LOST BRILLIANCE NEWSPAPER’S COMMENT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY, Sunday. In referring to the contest for the Rawson Stakes the newspapers contend that the idea that Limerick has recovered his former brilliance is exploded after yesterday’s race at Rosehill. The interference to which he was subjected near the seven furlongs post made no difference, while Winalot is an improved horse. Newspaper headings are ‘‘Gone is Limerick’s Glory. ITis sun is set. Fred Jones will have to do some hard thinking to pick up a race with him.”
