MISSED

/ INE of those things that not often happen on a racecourse —the missing of a placed horse by the judge—was witnessed at Paeroa on Saturday, in the Novice Handicap. The Jack Jumper, near the centre of the course, won by half a length from Haviland and Loving Cup. who were together on the rails, and either of the latter pair was second. About two lengths back were Night Comet and Whakama heading a bunch comprising Just Nell, Leona, La n d Measure, Swiftflight, Camp Prince and King Leslie. Judge of the general amazement when ‘Camp Prince, Loving Cup and Night Comet were placed respectively second, third and fourth, for Camp Prince had not been closer than tenth, and Haviland was officially regarded as having missed a place. Haviland’s colours were black with cardinal spots and cap, Loving Cup old gold with black band, and Camp Prince buttercup and rose pink hoops, buttercup sleeves and cherry cap. . Bearing these colours in mind, it is difficult to understand how Mr. R. B. Lush came to confuse Haviland and Camp Prince. The judge adhered to this decision. It wtl I be remembered that this same official appeared to miss Joy Germ out of a place the previous Saturday at Pukekohe, when he made Brilliant Light second. whereas from the Press box (almost in line) Brilliant Light actually finished fourth. The judge’s box at Paeroa »s right over the outside rails, and the progressive Ohinemuri J.C. would only be adopting the method followed by the majority of clubs by moving the box a few yards back. It would certainly make the judge’s task easier.
