AT MASTERTON

TO-MORROW’S RACING EASTER CANDIDATES ENGAGED The Masterton Club’s autumn meeting, a one-day fixture, eventuates tomorrow. Splendid acceptances have been received, and while no champions have been attracted by the programme the racing should be keen and instructive in view of the Easter gatherings following within range of the Wairarapa district. An interesting card commences -with the HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP. One mile. st lb st lb Killocra ..11 6 Sir Moment 9 6 No Favours JO 2 Gordon Swift 9 6 Asleep .. 9 13 Lady PassenAskari .. .. 9 11 ger .. . . 9 5 Lady Ben .. 9 9 Vexatious .. 9 4 Eonmark .. 9 8 Paraki .. 9 0 Hokio .... 9 7 Panorama .. 90 Weight would not stop number one horse if the going was on the easy side, but under the prevailing conditions he may have to give way to Hokio, who raced well a.t Trentham, and Asleep, if a good rider can be obtained for the last-named. The maidens will have their turn in the TRIAL STAKES, 5 furlongs; all 8.7. Mirelation Lhasa Mandarine Merry Sarto Piperenzo Our Bob Miss Glow Eloquent Royal Black Colarina Voronia Avazone v Colarina should figure prominently in this event. He has been endeavouring to win a race for some months, to generally meet with more than his share of misfortune. He races in the same colours as Commendation, and moreover is a half-brother by Elysian to that smart colt Paleta. Mandarine ran a fair race at Woodville recently, and in a bad field may extend Colarina. Fourteen are left in the TELEPHONE HACK HANDICAP. Six furlongs, st lb st lb Imitation .. 9 2 Ruakura .. 7 7 Kilmezzo .. 8 8 Mountain Bank Draft 8 7 Jean .. 7 1 Rowley .. SI Landguard .. 7 1 Addlepate .. 8 0 Hymgreat .. 7 1 Molto .. 7 11 Eliorz .. 7 0 Jemidar .. 7 9 Wailong .. 7 0 Carrigallon . 7 8 Kilmezzo has given glimpses of returning form, and when anywhere near his best the Kilbroney three-year-old has few superiors in the hack class. Of the remainder Jemidar displayed a rare turn of speed when he scored at Woodville, and a repetition of that form will see the Martian gelding bothering Kilmezzo. The open sprint immediately precedes the principal event. The short race is the FLYING HANDICAP. Six furlongs.

st lb st lb Royal Standard .. 8 1 Divorce .. 9 5 Lady Ideal 7 11 First Acre . S 13 Lady Fingers 7 7 Mireusonta . . S 11 Riverna .. 7 0 Polyphemus 8 8 Blonde .. 7 0 Kiloeit .. 8 1 Serenade , . 7 9 The outstanding quartette may perhaps be shown as First Acre, Polyphemus, Standard and Lady Ideal, and any one of these may go out favourite. However, recent running points rather strongly to Standard and First Acre, or, in the absence of the latter, Polyphemus. The big event on the card is the AUTUMN HANDICAP. U miles. st lb st lb Tanadees .. 913 Vesperus .. 711 Hynanna .. 9 9 Ardfinnan .. 7 4 First Acre.. S 9 Verigern .. 7 0 Beaumont .. 8 1 No Favours 7 0 Opa .. ’l2

This race is chiefly conspicuous by reason of the fact that of the nine acceptors the three top weights are prominently engaged at the Riccarton meeting. Tanadees, Hynanna and First Acre are a long way above the remainder both in weight and class, but it is quite possible that they will find something further down the scale to head them up the long straight on this track. At the recent Wellington meeting Vesperus was heavily supported to beat some good ones at a mile, and although he failed that should be borne in mind, for he is a good performer. Although one cannot altogether overlook the top trio, it would occasion small surprise should Vesperus and Opa head them. The two-year-olds will have their fun in the JUVENILE HANDICAP. Five furlongs, st lb st lb Cosmetic .. 811 Thurnbelle .. 7 9 King Midas 8 9 Vigilance . - 7 * Arrow Lad 3 9' Keddar .. 7 7 Chips .. 8 8 The Masher 7 7 Teri . . .. 8 5 Thurnvtlle .. 7 6 Exhibition .. 7 9 Constantia ..7 6 Historic .. 7 9 Grey Mist -« 4 Hygrade .. 7 9 Liloch .. 7 ■» No less than six of the above have already succeeded in getting on the winning list: Cosmetic, King Midas, Arrow Lad, Chips, Exhibition and Teri, so form has been disclosed so far as they are concerned. When King Midas won at ’Woodville he looked as if the race would do him a world of good, and so if he has made the expected improvement he should again finish in front of the improving Vigilance. The next event is the STEWARDS' HANDICAP. One mi^e. st lb st lb Tresham . - 9 0 Ardfinnan .. 711 Killocra . . 8 8 Lady Ideal.. 7 8 Merry Damon S 6 Willow "Wai . 7 7 Bonhomme .. 8 4 Blonde .. 7 6 Black Mint.. 713 Serenade .. 7 0 Two appear to stand out, and they are Bonhomme and Black Mint. The distance will suit them both. Black Mint will like the long straight, and it should be a good race between the pair. The running of Merry Damon, now in Rowley Hatch’s stable, will be watched with interest by Aucklanders. No doubt there will be the usual scramble in the concluding race, the DASH HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. st lb st lb Verigern .. 9 1 Sir Moment 7 5 Kilmezzo .. 8 6 Hymestrason 7 4 Bank Draft 8 6 Hymill .. 7 4 General Wai 7 13 Colarina .. 7 3 Addlepate .. 7 11 Lhasa .. 7 0 Henna .. 7 8 Pangrama .. 7 0 Molto .. 7 S Avazone .. 7 0 Gordon Swift 7 5 With 15 threatening to line up it will be some race all right, with probably a nice dividend to finish up on. Some of the above are also in the other hack handicap, and Kilmezzo is one of them. In the event of Kilmezzo starting he will be difficult to head off, and in his absence two that would possess chances are Addlepate and Bank Draft. The top-weight appears to go better under the light scale of weights. By the way, the Dash Handicap is a seven-furlong affair. Usually they are five furlong scrambles.
