DIOGENES TO RACE AT ELLERSLIE

Diogenes had Maidos and the two-year-old Duke Abbey as companions in a round on the plough. Probably nothing serious will be asked of the Cynic gelding until the approach of the Auckland winter meeting. Maidos is a very fair type of animal, who should prove capable of picking up a stake in the hurdling branch, while the youngster shows a wealth of promise. The Sarto-Elusian gelding Rangi Sarto, who proved a very profitable proposition in the hurdling branch at the opening of the present season, was given an introduction to the doublebrush fence and the battens yesterday morning and proved quite at home, which was not, however, surprising in view of the fact that he had been hunted. The winter period will probably find him essaying the big country. Trainer H. H. Doyle has charge of Rangi Sarto, while E. Stratton, who is displaying increasing confidence at the game, is schooling him. That mentor has a youngster under his charge who claims Acre as his sire and Rangiata as his dam. Rangiata is by Aberbrothick from Elusian, and the youngster thus claims relationship with Rangi Sarto. Little River and Santonio were sent a round over the battens, a good pace being maintained throughout. Santonio rapped two fences fairly hard, finishing up by flattening the last. Rawhero (Miles) and Comedy Prince (C. Robinson) were companions in a round over five fences, the pair giving an excellent display, particularly the former who, although she comes from a strong jumping stable, has not had a great deal of experience. ARDATH CRASHES Ardath, the member of L. Knapp’s string who suffered a fall on Saturday morning with the direct result that his youthful rider, B. Riddall, was sent to hospital with an injured elbow, was restricted to strong pace work on the plough yesterday morning. Hautawa and Lady Comet, who will be found in the jumping game later, were also given strong work on the plough, while the Lucullus gelding Lucre, Mister Gamp, Some Lad and others carried out useful tasks. Royal Land and the raking Crown Area, with a couple of light boys up, were sent along over five furlongs on the grass. Royal Land, who has proved himself to be pretty smart over a short sprint, was in front throughout, but the long striding Crown Area was not fully extended. He was, however, blowing somewhat suspiciously at the close.

The Boniform —Signal March mare Bon March has made a reappearance on the local tracks and looks very well after her long spell. Last year she had a fairly busy season, being required to face the barrier on 18 occasions for three wins, two seconds and a third. The Husbandman gelding, Roman, who was purchased by the Awapuni studmaster, W. Bailey, some little time ago after the hurdler had failed to display the form expected of him, is in active work following a good spell in the paddock. The let-up has done him good and he may yet demonstrate his ability as a jumper. A LIVELY SORT Millie Abbey, the half-sister to Mill O’Gowrle, gave her young rider some anxious moments as she was taken out on to the plough, but when once under way, settled down nicely. She is somewhat on the small side to indicate her ever being the performer over fences her relative was. Trainer J. Kelly rode Capitulation. The chestnut mare carries a bright appearance.

H. Burt, the local hurdle rider, will have the mounts on Passin’ Through at the Auckland meeting. The Guianforte gelding will, in all probability, be a runner in the Brighton Hurdles on the opening day, prior to contesting the steeplechase. The unruly Inferno, who was recently injured on a wing in attempting to run off at a hurdle, has made a good recovery. The son of Absurd, who is still debarred from racing on the flat, has been nominated for the hurdles at Feilding, but it is questionable whether he has had sufficient schooling to merit his acceptance. However, the handsome gelding appears to be quietening down as the result of his experiences. The Acre-Mungaroa colt, who was purchased by Mr. C. Louisson at the Trentham sales, was a visitor to the tracks yesterday morning, but his visit was purely educational. The youngster is built on splendid lines, and as he is also well mannered, a good future appears to be before him.
