SHIP’S LIGHTS FAIL

BAD NIGHT IN HEAVY SWELL Press Association WELLINGTON, Monday. Owing to the failure of the auxiliary engines when near the Karori Rock light at 8.20 last night, the Tamahlne, bound for Picton from Wellington, was suddenly plunged into total darkness. Speed had to be reduced, and a south-east swell made conditions uncomfortable for passengers. Temporary lights were hoisted and hand steering gear brought into commission. The vessel, sailing under reduced steam, arrived at 1.20 a.m.
