AVALANCHE ON EGMONT.
Tracks To Stratford Hostel Blocked STREAMS RUNNING HIGH. Stormy weather, with hail, rain and heavy snow, was experienced on Mount Egmont at the week-end. The. conditions on Saturday were particularly rough, but no damage has been reported. Last night indications were for an improvement. A second heavy avalanche at the Mackie Rocks, at the head of the Manganui Gorge, was found by a party from the Stratford hostel on Saturday morning. • The fall was about twic as large as that preceding it and upon which it fell. When discovered it was impassable, but tracks were cut in the week-end, with the result that the transit of the gorge has now been improved. The week-end was very stormy at Dawson Falls, particularly on Saturday, and up till 9 a.m. yesteday 4i inches of rain had fallen. Rain showers were then interspersed with snow and hail. All the streams were running high, and late on Saturday many of the fords on the track to the Stratford plateau were almost impassable. Under the conditions little activity was to be expected, but a party of Mount Egmont Alpine Club members visied Dawson Falls yesterday. Five inches of snow fell at the Manganui hut at the week-end, and parties of visitors and members of the Stratford Mounain Club yesterday found conditions, although it was still snowing, excellent for ski-ing. At the plateau three inches of snow fell, but the plateau was nevertheless passable for cars. :
