JUDGMENT FOR DEFENDANT Gisborno, July 4. In the Arbitration Court to-day before Mr. Justice U'razer a claim for £IOOO was made by Mary Ellen Lanigan against Ralph Christian Murphy, sheep farmer. the plaintiff is the widow oi the late William Lanigan, hotel-keeper, Whangara, who was injured while crutchmg sneep for the defendant and died the same day. Counsel for the defendant raised the contention that there was no contract of service such as was required by the Act. After half an hour's adjournment the Court held that the arrangement between the defendant and Lanigan involved no contractual liability, being simply an agreement between friendly neighbours. Judgment was given for the defendant with costs £lB 18s.
