Reed. Today, 8.45 a.m. WASHINGTON, May 12. MEANS testified today that the Lindbergh baby was stolen by New Jersey liquor runners. He said Max Hassel and Max Greenberg were responsible for the kidnapping. He did not know them, but they had sold been to the servants at the Lindbergh house. Irving Fenton, described previously by him as one of those responsible for the kidnapping, had told him that Lindbergh as a practical joke on occasions had placed the baby in a closet and told the servants the baby had been stolen. This joke, said Means, gave the kidnappers an idea, and one of the members of their ring went to the Lindbergh house with beer, picked the baby from its crib, and went away.
Means testified that the infant I body found in New Jersey and identified by Lindbergh a year ago as his child was a "plant," according to information, which Means said had been given him by one, Wellington Henderson, whom he had identified previously as one of the kidnanpers. Means said Henderson visited him when he (Means) was out on bail following his arrest in the McLean case, and said he and the real Lindbergh, baby were at Juarez. This was on May 17 of last year. Means further said Henderson told him the baby was still alive at that date, also that the autopsy performed on the body of the baby found in
NeAV Jersey had disclosed different measurements from those of the real Lindbergh child. Killing o! Racketeers EFFECT OF GANG WAR. Heed. Today. 9.25 a.m. Elizabeth (New Jersey), May 12. Max Hassel and Max Greenberg, known as beer racketeers, were slain here to-day, presumably by gangster enemies. A safely deposit box rented by Hassel was opened by Federal officials on April 28 on Court order. It contained 213.000 dollars in cash and a note for 50.000 dollars signed by an Elizabeth lawyer.
