The District Railways Engineer, Wanganui, asked that the Council consider full protection of the Warwick Hoad railway crossing by the erection of cross-arm notice hoards. The communication pointed out that a collision occurred on (he crossing recently, between a motor car and a train. There wore no warning notices on (he west side of the crossing. A
new cross-arm signal would cost ..CL. The Council decided to proceed wii.li the work immediately and the engineer will be instructed accordingly.
Aero Club Request
The secretary of the newly-formed Stratford Aero Club (Mr. 1). E. White) wrote requesting permission for the Council’s engineer to take levels and carry out other similar operations preparatory to levelling Die surface of the proposed Stratford airport ground. It was trusted that the Council would extend its co-operation in such au essentially community effort. Cr. Nelson said that the project was worthy of support, but it was likely that the job of taking levels would occupy a good deal of the engineer's time.
Cr. Harkness said that ho favoured assisting the club in view of the fact that it was an institution in accord with modern progress, and because it constituted a community effort. It would not be long before the club would wait on the Council for a donation, and be suggested that the engineer’s services be offered in lieu of any direct financial assistance. Cr. Trotter favoured assisting the club. He said that the proposed aerodrome was not far from the town, and its establishment would constitute an asset to the district.
Cr. Speck also favoured the application. He was of opinion that an aero club and landing ground in the district would more or less put Stratford on the map. Cr. Harkness’ suggestion was adopted.
