Russia v. Austria.
Occupation of Lemberg RUSSIANS TAKE THOUSANDS OF PRISONERS. Petrograd, September 4. It is officially reported that during seven days the Russians took over 200 guns and 70,000 prisoners in Galicia.
The Russians have occupied Lam-
berg. Official advice is to the effect that apart from the enormous number of killed, the Austrians in Eastern Galicia lost 40,000 prisoners, including many generals. The route of the retreat was so encumbered with carts, guns, and impedimenta that .the, pursuers were unable to use the roads. Other advices state that some millions of men were engaged in the operations. Upwards of half of the Austrian array was fighting in southern Poland, their-left flank closely 1 co-oper-ating with two German army-corps facing Breslau. The Austrian left sought to envelope the Russian forces in Poland, and the extreme right endeavored to outflank the Podolia army. Meanwhile the main Austrian force had been directed at the heart of the Russian position in Poland, but the enveloping movement to the west failed, and the Germans were withdrawn to the north to deal with the victorious Rimsiau advance., The Austrians’ centre at Lublin was vainly launched against Russia’s finest battalions, while, the Austrians’ extreme right sustained terrible losses. The worst blow was deft by General Ruziky. The latter’s force, leaving Lovno, advanced to the southwest, spreading fanwise to involve districts north and south of Lemberg, and threatening to cut the Lublin army’s communication. In the Lemberg engagement the Austrians transferred several army corps from the west side of the Vistula, and, moving them behind Lublin, hurled them at General Rouzsky’s forces. This desperate onslaught i was atended, as officially announced,by a whole series of disasters to the Austrians.
THE RUSSIAN DEFEAT OF AUSTRIA.
“A FRESH SEDAN.”
(Received 12.20 p.m.) London, September 4
The Times, in a leader, refers to the Russians’ defeat of the Austrians on Sedan Day as a fresh Sedan. It is the greatest defeat the Austrians evermet with on the battlefield. The wonderful victory of Lemberg makes the battle of Wagram and General Mack’s surrender of Ulm small by comparison.
(At Wagram, in Lower Austria, Napoleon destroyed the Austrians in 1809).
