RUSSIA’S CROWNING VICTORY OVER AUSTRIA.
GERMAN OPERATIONS 36 MILES NORTH-WEST PARIS.
The High Commissioner reports under date London, 4th September:— "■ * •*'' : 1
Official: Seven days’ most stubborn fighting in eastern Galicia resulted in a complete victory for the Russians. Five Austrian corps were completely routed, retreating in disorder westward, abandoning arms and baggage. Besides an enormous number of killed, the Austrians lost 40,000 prisoners, including many generals. , ■
Panic is spreading among the Austrian troops. During seven days the Russians have taken two hundred guns and seventy thousand prisoners.
The operations extended over a front of two hundred miles. The Austrians’ extreme right sustained the greatest
losses
This crowning victory means that Russia and Seryia have accounted for practically half of the Austro-Hungarian army, and Germany cannot expect help from her ally.
The general line occupied by the aWied armies in northern France is the line of the Seine to west of Paris. The Allies hold a fairly strong position, and their front is still unbroken.
The Russians have captured Lemberg and Klicz
Reliable: The enemy is bombarding Sends, 30miles northwest from Paris.
