RECRUITING EXTRAORDINARY. QUEEN’S WORK FOR WOMEN FUND. (Received 9.0 a.m.) London, September 4 (morning). Twenty thousand enrolled yesterday. The authorities in London are scarcely able to cope with the rush. Despite this enthusiasm, the clergy are being circularised to appeal for recruits in their sermons on Sunday and meetings have been arranged all over Loudon.
The Queen’s belief is that a prevention of distress is better than relief, and employment better than charity, and Her Majesty has inaugurated funds with which women will be provided with employment. Lady Crewe is chairwoman, and Mrs Asquith, Mi’s Austin Chamberlain, Lady Bryce, Lady Derby, and Lady Illchester are assisting. The money raided will be spent in schemes devised by the central committee. The women’s employment commercial advisers include many leading businessmen.
