AND ENGLISHMEN THEY PROVED THEMSELVES.
TKE RACKET OF THE GUNS.

The South Lancashire Regiment made a. heroic stand in the recent fighting. They occupied an exposed position and were raked by machine guns. There were momentary signs of wavering, blit the Major rallied the men, shouting “Be Englishmen !” And Englishmen they proved themselves to be. On© “Tommy” [carried on his hack for a distance of 1800 yards his young wounded subaltern, but the latter died en route. Th® would-ha rescuer’s only comment was; “Now T am deaf in one car from the dreadful racket of the guns.”
