Sir C. Kinloch-Cooke asked Sir Kdward Grey to enquire whether Australia, would accept responsibility for the administration of the New Hebrides.
Sir Edward Grey said it was impossible to make the suggestion without asking whether they would themselves undertake the purchase or make exchange of territory.
NEGOTIATIONS OPENED

Mr V. IX A eland informed Mr J'oyn-son-Hicks that pourparlers had been opened with France towards a conference to discuss details regarding the New Hebrides.
DOMINION SUPPORT WANTED.
Received 10 a.m.) Svdnev, March 5
Representations have been made to Mr Massey (Premier) by the Presbyterian Missions Board of Australia, asking that the Dominion use its influence in supporting the protest to Mr Harcourt regarding the New Hebrides.
Referring to the cahlcd suggestion that Australia should acquire the French rights in the New Hebrides by purchase, Mr Glynn (.Minister of External Affairs), said the Commonwealth Government was prepared to meet any opportunity of settling the question on linos honorable to the two nations concerned, whether it involved pecuniary or other methods of adjustment.
