ANOTHER SYDNEY STRIKE. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyrightl [United Press Association. J Sydney, February 17. Five hundred men struck at the Clyde works to-day. The strike was ■ precipitated by the members of the Ironworkers’ Assistants’ Union. The men’s demand of an increase to 10s was refused by the employers. The employers also refuse to hold a conference with the men. As a result, the men will not resume work. Unless a speedy settlement is effected the whole of the works will be closed. THOUSANDS OF MINERS IDLE London, February 17. Nine thousand Yorkshire miners and three thousand in South Wales are idle owing to the minimum wage disputes. THE LIVING WAGE (Received 9.50 a.m.) Sydney, February 18. Botli sides express satisfaction at Justice Heydon fixing a living wage, though Mr Conroy, member of the assembly, points out that the Commonwealth cannot afford to pay every adult a fixed limit unless the production largely increases, and payment will have to be at the expense of other sections of the community. It was manifest, therefore, that payments of Justice Heydon’s standard in some directions can only he met at present by lessening the wages \in others.
