The Bishop of Winchester, presiding at the Church Congress, powerfully appealed to the militants to agree to a Truce of God for the benefit alike of men and women and for the relief of the inflamed and unwholesome conditions of social lite. A SCIENTIFIC THEORY. London, October 24. Professor Lill, in a lecture at Bristol University, ascribed the explosion in the mines recently to the improved ventilation. These could be prevented if the oxygon in the air were lowered from '2l to 1" per cent of the atmosphere. This would not be deleterious to miners. An excess of carbonic acid in a crowded room was not prejudicial, as the oxygen was nevei diminished more than one per cent. THE CHURCH UNITED.
