ARRESTED WHILE ON HIS HONEYMOON.
Melbourne, October 13. Bertie Crommelin, who was married in Sydney less than a week before, and was arrested on Saturday on ; charge of having endeavoured to impose upon Frederick Connaughton, of Perth, by false representation in writing, appeared before the City Court to-day. The case against Crommelin, as stated by Detective Hawkins, was that he sent a telegram, signed T. Weston, to Frederick Connaughton, Perth, asking for £2O to he forwarded to him. Connaughton, knowing that the only T. Weston he knew of was in West Australia, placed the matter in the hands of the West Australian police, who advised the Melbourne police to apprehend the person who called for a telegram for T. Weston. Accused was seen to go to the telegraph office, where he asked for and received a telegram addressed to T. Weston. He was then arrested. Accused admitted that he sent the telegram, adding that he was hard up. He knew both Connaughton and Weston.
Several witnesses, including residents of West Australia, testified as to accused's good character, and the Bench imposed a sentence of three months, suspending it under the provisions of the First Offenders Act, on accused providing sureties to he o' good behaviour for 12 months.
