Shanchez, interrigated, blamed his daughter Luisa. She retorted that die tried to prevent the tragedy but her father threatened to kill her. Sanchez’s counsel aruged that he was not responsible for his actions. He committed the murder in a fit of mad jealousy seeing that the girl whom he had an illicit affection was on intimate terms with another.
Los Angeles, September 17
General Otis attributes bis attempted assassination to the same parties who destroyed the Los Angeles Times in 1910. A Japanese servant’s suspicions were aroused by the packet, and ho called Otis’s attention to it. Otis handed the packet to the people, who found that it contained enough dynamite to destroy half the buildings in Los Angeles.
(The office of the Los Angeles Times was the scene of a serious explosion eighteen months ago, engineered by labor agitators).
New York, September 17
The discovery of a counterfeiters’ den operated by Schmidt and other criminals indicates that Schmidt was one of the most cunning of modern criminals. The detectives believe that his insanity was feigned. Dr. Ernest Murat, a dentist, lias been arrested in connection with the counterfeiting. It is believed that ho is Schmidt’s accomplice, in some of his criminality,. at any rate. London, September 17. (Received 10.35 a.m.) The overdue Americana has been posted missing.
