A VICTORIAN MYSTERY.
AN OLD MAN’S DEATH
By Electric Telegraph—Copyright] [United Press Association.] (Received 9.30 a.m.) , . Melbourne, September 18. The coroner found that Knight was. ihotrbyr an unknown person. All efforts of the police to trace the murderer have been futile.
A Melbourne message to the Sydney Daily Telegraph on Monday, 11th August, stated: Mystery attaches to the death of Richard Knight, an elderly man who was yesterday found with his head almost blown off, about 100 yards away from his hut, on lu-ijram-road, Coldstream, about throe
miles from Lillydale. Knight, who ■mid'lived alone in his lint at Ingram Road for many years past, had not been seen about by his neighbours luring the last few days, and one of ,heta yesterday afternoon went to the but to investigate. After making i search he found the body in some hick scrub. The left side of the face was terribly mutilated, but in this -aso it was evident that the charge bad travelled downwards. A diligent march around the spot whore the body was found failed to locate any run or other firearm, which a man would have had to yse had he comnitted suicide. The failure of the police and other searchers to find a weapon which could have caused Knight’s injuries strengthens the opposition that the old man did not ■ommit suicide.
