FATALITIES AT MATAWAI. [Per Press Association.] Gisborne, April 18. Charles Gome was found dead in an outhouse at Matawai last night. A carrier named Cameron was driving on the Matawai Road at midnight a dray containing a heavy load of timber. The dray capsized on him, and it was two bourse before his plight was discovered. His condition is serious. A FATAL AFFRAY. Auckland, April 18. A fight took place this afternoon on the Harbour Board’s pile-driving pontoon, and as a result Manuel Santos died from injuries received, and Harold Gladstone Browne is in custody, charged with wilful murder. The fight was fierce, according to an eye-witness, and Santos finished up in the water. He was rescued, but died soon afterwards. Deceased was a native of Ladrone Islands, and was a married man 37 years of ago. He leaves no family.

FOUND DROWNED. Christchurch, April 18. The decomposed body of a middleaged man. was found in the riverbed at Eyreton to-day. It was evidently washed down .by the last flood. Joseph Gobble was arrested on a •barge of drunkenness, and after a determined resistance was placed in i motor-car,and was being carried to the police station when he attempted to jump from the car. The constable seized his arm and Gobbie’s leg, which was caught in the wheel, was broken. Gobble was removed to the hospital.
