THE PUTUMAYO SCANDAL.
Senor Arana, whose name lias been good deal before the public in connection with the Putumayo Committee’s enquiry into the South American “red rubber” scandals, is referred to in a recent issue of London “Truth” as follows The announcement of Mr .Julius Arana’s intention of coming to London is not altogether surprising. The directors of tin* Peruvian A mar,on Company are virtually on their trial in London, and the general tendency of their evidence has been to plead ignorance of the horrors of the rubber gathering business and lay all the blame on Arana ■is the managing director and the con-
trailer of the company’s affairs in Pciu, as well as founder of the concern and vendor to the company. All
this places Arana in a very awkward position Kvon if it is not true, as announced in a recent newspaper despatch, that the Peruvian Government has ordered his arrest, ic is hardly conceivable that after the course which the English enquiry lias taken ho and his associates will not have to be put on their trial in Peru. In that case he would bo seriously compromised if he allowed the- judgment of the Select Committee to go against him by default. He will run a, certain amount of risk, however, by coming to London, for it seems possible that he might bo put on his trie.! hero. It is to be hoped that this possibility will not he overlooked by those whom it concerns.
