The Stratford Evening Post WITH WITCH IS INCORPORATED THE EGMONT SETTL ER TUESDAY, APRIL 15, 1913. EGG-LAYING COMPETITIONS.

The “Lyttelton Times” holds that egg-laying competitions have proved an important factor in the betterment of poultry farming as a profitable industry, and points out that the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club’s competition, which has just been concluded at Papanui, lias brought forth a pen of White Leghorns which has established a world’s record by laying 1632 eggs during the twelve months. The club lias wisely retained the four leading pens in the competition just concluded, and the birds .will be pitted against the new pullets in this year’s tost. The club has in the past few competitions made a feature of that somewhat neglected, but highly utilitarian bird, the duck, and the leading pens in the duek section will also be retained for a further test. At the Hawkesbury Agricultural College, Xew South Wales, the “Sydney Daily Telegraph’s” eleventh annual competition has been finished, and there, too, a world’s record was established, six ducks laying no fewer than 1601 eggs during the-year, and eclipsing by twelve the highest tally ever put up previously. The honour, until the ducks “got busy,” stood with six White Leghorn hens, which laid 1389 eggs in 1911-12. The weight of the eggs laid by the champion ducks totalled 2321 b, or over ton times their own weight. With the example of the Panama liens and the Hawkesbury ducks to -pur them on, there is every probability of the birds in this year’s competitions creating new records on both sides of the Tasman Sea.
