A TARANAKI COURT .

COUNTY COUNCIL RUMINATING. Messrs. W. P. Kirkwood and J. B. Richards waited on the Stratfoid County Council yesterday as a deputation from the Finance Conmuutee of the Taranaki Court general committee, asking for the moral support of the Stratford County Council in the proposal to erect, at a cost of £SOO, a Taranaki Court at the Auckland Exhibition. Later on the Council would be asked to contribute its share of the cost, £7O. Mr J. B. Richards also reviewed the position. Councillor Smith, while flunking there should be a Taranaki Court, said that be thought the scheme of contribution was wrong in that a population basis and : rot a land value basis should be chosen. Ho mentioned that the inflation of land values would bo encouraged by the Taranaki Court, and gave it as bis opinion that a fall in the value of our primary products would mean something of a calamity. Mr Richards replied that the basis of contributions was the most equitable that could be devised. As to inflating land values, they were mainly concerned in increasing the values of produce. Whether that would have the effect of inflating the land values was another matter. Cr. Anderson moved that this Council approve of a Taranaki Court et tho Auckland Exhibition, but thinks that the manufacturers should, supply the bulk of the funds.—Lapsed for want of a seconder, Cr. Young moved that the mattei bo held over for a month. , Cr. Christoff el seconded. The words were added at the suggestion of Cr. Marfcll that “as the Council is not convinced that ratepayers who are chiefly the primary producers are likely to be much benefitted thereby.’

Cr, Smith njoved, as an amendment, that this Council approves of the Taranaki Court provided a more comprehensive scheme is brought forward. No seconder was found for this motion, and it also lapsed.^ Finally the motion was carried.
