WORK AND WAGES.

THE AFTERNOON SHIFT. Syciney, January 8. The unrest in the northern coalfields over the abolition of the afternoon shift continues, but no action has been formulated, pending a meeting with the proprietors to-morrow. THE FIREMEN’S STRIKE. Dunedin, January 8. Some strenuous work was done bj the officers, stewards and deck hands who transferred from the Tarawera tc the Moura in order to get the lattei vessel away this evening for northern ports. With the exception cf two, all the firemen on the Tarawera were missing, and search for them proved unavailing. Efforts to induce the Tarawera’s ex-firemen to sign on were iesuitless, though one of them volunteered to work if he was paid £2 for the run to Lyttelton. About 9 p.m Mr. Belcher, the secretary, declined to sign the men on the Moura, but most of them booked passages by her to Lyttelton or Wellington. However, the full number of firemen (twelve) were secured, and the passengers joined the vessel, which was ready to sail at 7 p.m. The discovery was then made that four firemen of the Seamen’s Union had arrived on the scene, and arrangements were made to get matters fixed up to allow the Moura to get away at noon to-morrow. RATLWAYMEN’S AFFAIRS. (Received 9.35 a.m.) London, January 8. The Maesteg strike has been set-

tied, the non-unionists having joined the Federation of North-Eastern | Raihvnymcn at Newcastle-on- lyne and Gateshead. As a protest against Knox’s second suspension, they have adopted dilatory working methods, and are adhering strictly to the rules, the methods being similar to those adopted in the Italian strike of 1905.
