THE STRATFORD-TE KORU RAILWAY.

(To the Editor “Stratford Post.”) Sir, —I am somewhat surprised that in the face of the practical stoppage of the railway out east, that the Mayor, the Chamber of Commerce, or the Reform League, have not considered it worth while to call public meetings to insist that this work, which is of colonial importance, be pushed on at a faster rate. We should have a giod wicket to play on. Mr. Allen says the revenue for eight months is half a million better than last year; so now is the time to demand that the trade of the Ohura Valley that rightly belongs to Taranaki shall be brought here as speedily as possible. We cannot expect any help from Auckland or Wellington, as both those towns will p ill the wires for all they are worth to make the Alain Trunk connection from Te Koru to suit them. They are after this rich country, and while Tara*, naki is grasping after shadows like the Opunake and West Taranaki line the other places are going to gobble up the substance. At least 200 men have been sacked, and on the best information it is stated that another hundred are to go. Air Hine, M.P., soys none were to be sacked, but he is evidently not in the confidence of ■the Ministry, and as far as the welfare of his district is concerned he night as well be as extinct as the Moa If we do not get to work at once, we will wake up to the fact that we have lost our out-East trade, and the blame will be to a great extent on our own shoulders. I trust, Sir, you will give the public bodies somewhat of a lead in your columns, and insist that they do their duty to the people who elect them to fill responsible positions. I REFORMER. Stratford, December 7.
