DOMINION TELEGRAMS
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, September 5. At a meeting of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society Mr L. 0. Tripp (chairman) said he had received notice from the Minister of Internal Affairs that the protection of opossums had been removed. He Iliad also received a letter from a farmer pointing out that it was a mistake to wholly remove protection as it would be sufficient to remove it for winter months only. Winter skins were valuable ones. Mr Tripp said he was making inquiries into the subject with a view to approaching the Government. Good winter skins were worth ten shillings each, so the trade in skins was a valuable one and it would employ many men in winter, when, as a rule, a general demand for labour was scarce. Protection could if required lie removed in-fruit districts. Opossum skins were as valuable .as store lamb and the question tiff-'protection was important. There was no -sport in shooting opossum, so the matter was purely a commercial one.
