THE WAIHI STRIKE.

Delegates from the Strike, Committee of'/the Wailii Miners' Onion ad dressed an open-air meeting at Thames on Saturday night and explained their action re the strike, and sought to justify the same, though the local miners are registered under the Arbitration Act and are opposed to tinadoption of the strike method. The speakers admitted that the Waihi strike had been called beeausi of the formation of the Engine-driv ors' Union and the secession oi it: members from the Waihi Miners' Uni on. They contended that this war the third attempt to break up the Fed oration of Labour, but all the prove ons efforts had failed, as this .would fail. The Waihi men were fighting foi an imnortant • principle. They were opposed to coining under the Arbitration Act, and this was a covert attempt to undermine the power and influence tho union. One speaker asked the Thames minors to support their comrades. The reply was: '"You'll get our support when you get rid of the Socialistic element," At the conclusion of the delegates speeches some local miners spoke against strikes. Tho meeting concluded with "Rule Britannia." PAEROA RESUMING. Auckland, May 20. The Herald's correspondent at Taenia states that the Paeroa Extraction Company has obtained men to fill the places of those who went on strike a lev,- days ago. and wort: is to be continued as usual.
