The Miners' Conference strongly protected against several awards fixing a minimum below a reasonable living wage, and instructed tlhe executive to seek an interview with the Government.
Sir Edward Clark, chairman of the South Yorkshire Conciliation Board, has awarded the highest minimum wages as follows:—Getters, Us 9d; trimmers and fillers, 5s 9d ; by workmen superintendents, Gs, all others over twenty-one ,ss; hoys, 2s to 4s lOd. The award follows the principle of a fair day's work for a fair day's pay, and men failing to work eighty per cent, of shift during the week or work to tiae best advantage or execute reasonable orders, will forfeit the right to the minimum.
