Sydney, May 13. Four burglaries were committed at Hnrstliill yesterday. The total of the loot only amounted to £3. At Wentworth a widow named Mrs. White was found with her throat fatally cut. The body of her fourteen-year-old son was lying on the bed in another room. It is suspected that tii woman killed the boy and then committed suicide.

The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows’ Conference entered a strong protest against the Government’s proposal tc introduce compulsory insurance.
(Received May 14, 10.30 n.m.) Sydney, May 14. Mr Lett, discoverer of petroleum in Papua, lias returned. He is enthusiastic concerning the possibilities bf the enterprise. The field is situated on the Bailala river, about the centre of the Gulf division. The extent is not yet ascertained.
