EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTH LY MEETING
The Education Board meeting was concluded yesterday, when there were present; Messrs H. Trimble (chairman), (i. A. Adlam, A. H. Halcombe, \V. McL. Kennedy and Rev. McArtlinr. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs W. Rogers, J. Young, and A. Morton. Overseer’s Report. The overseer (Mr C. H. Moore) reported that the York residence had ijeon completed and fenced. Repairs had also been attended to at the school. At Tariki a porch had been erected at the residence, and small repa rs to the school attended to. The drainage would l)e done as soon as tho pipes wore available. At ])«dley, a new tank stand had been erected and a new tank ordered. It was also proposed to relay the drainage. Re Durham residence, he recommended alterations and additions, making it into a cottage of four rooms. Plans were in hand, but he also pointed out the small area of ground available. The report was adopted. The matter of the additions to the Durham residence and acquiring extra land for the school site was left in the chairman’s hands, with power to act. Architects’ Report. Ro erecting Stratford School.—Tho above work iiad been visited twice every week and fa r progress had been made, considering the weather, which, at least for the month, had been very much against expeditions work, as the bricklayers had lost a lot of time owing to the wet weather. Ihe brick, work was now completed, and preparations were being made to get the roof on. The contractor was now away in Wellington engaging plasterers. Progress would depend upon the weather for a few days longer until the roof was on. After that it would be all indoor work, when long hours could ho worked. Indeed, the men had now been working overtime to in some measure make up for lost tone. It was somewhat uncertain whether the contract would be completed within tho contract time, but there was no doubt the contractor would do his utmost to that end.—The report was adopted. Painting Tenders. Tenders for painting were accepted as follows, being the lowest in each case:—Rowan (school), Beckett and Roberts, £9 19sj, Muiioc (school ami .•osidence), H. Peterson, £27;' Cardiff (school and residence), W. Read, £2O 'Bs; NCaere (school and .esidencc), W. Read, £27.195; Matau (school and residence), C. G. McLeggan, £29 16s kl; Pihama (school and residence), J. Treenhill, £4l; Kaimata (school and residence), C. G. McLeggan, £l7 os >d; Ratap ko (school and residence), 0. G. 'McLeggan, £18; Waitara 'school), H. Petersen, £3l; Huirangi 'school and residence), H. Petersen, 620 10s. Tho Kaimtro Trouble. Mr. W. Mundt, lion, secretary- of the Kaiiniro School Committee, forwarded copy of law costs, £3 3s, incurred by 'the School Committee in connection with the case, Kaimiro school Committee v. W. G. Shoemark, -,o recover money received by tho defendant for the express purpose of licnics and prizes. The committee vent to a lot of trouble to receive tho uoney, and ultimately had to take it ;o Court, when judgment was given n their favour, the Magistrate holding that the case should never have gone to Court, as the money should lave been handed over as soon as the lew committee was elected. The posi';ion they now found themselves in was flint they could not pay the amount out of capitation, even if it were legal, because they would have no funds to carry on the*school work with. As 'die money recovered was raised for a special purpose they could not use hat money for- any other purpose. They therefore asked the Board to lay the amount or to make a special grant to enable them to do so. ’ The Chairman fully detailed _ tho circumstances of the case, and said he considered that it was a fair claim. The matter was left in the chairman’s hands. Tar for Asphalt. The Huirangi School Committee’s -equest for a barrel of tar to enable diem to-asphalt the shelter shed floor was acceded to.
