COMPENSATION CLAIMS
tPer Press Association j Dunedin, November, 9. In the Arbitration Court to-day Norman Campbell and Agues Campbell, oi Janefield, near Mosgicl, claimed ■2273 as compensation as partial dependents of their son James, who was killed in March by accident at Millerton while in the employ of the Westport Coal Co. Decision was reserved. Edward Lawrie claimed £2B 10s 6d compensation from John Waldie, slaughterman, for accident on. March 29th, whereby his elbow was fractured and other injuries sustained through falling off a ladder. For plaintiff it ( was claimed that the. accident occur'red on the third day of his employment. The defences was that the plaintiff was not engaged and that lie was helping defendant’s son and other slaughtermen with the object of securing an engagement. Defendant admitted that lie gave plaintiff 2s Gd and saw his son lend him 10s. It was admitted that defendant's son usually had assistance, but that at the time of the accident he had none. The Court held that the plaintiff was working for defendant and awarded him £2O with costs £7 7s (witnesses’ expenses and disbursements).
