= z-<r-~-J-attrHH W2« consumption. IS IT INSEPARABLE FROM HUMANITY. At tho meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday morning the following resolution forwarded by the secretary of the Otago Board was load: That the attention of the Government be drawn to the urgent necessity o'f an amount: being placed upon tho Estimates to cope with the eradication of consumption, and that the undermentioned resolution which was unanimously passed by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards at a conference rccentlyX hold in Wellington be immediately given effect to; That in the opinion of this conference it is imperative that the Government place such a sum upon the Estimates and form such regulations as will enable Hospital Boards to endeavour to effectively stamp out the spread of tuberculosis. Mr Merchant moved that the Board use its host endeavour to forward the object of the resolution. Mr Maxwell gave it as his opinion that consumption would exist so long ns men existed, and he thought that the endeavour mentioned was only an endeavour to attain the unattainable. It would mean the creation of more officials and would do no good. Mr Marchant said he regretted Mr Maxwell’s remarks. A commission sot up in .England had reported that in Groat Britain consumption could he eradicated in twenty-five years; and if it could not be stamped out in a less time in this new i country at least it could be stamped out more easily. Mr. Maxwell said people were too prone to pay attention to the statements of professional man, no matter in what walk of life he wap.;; He ,did not agree with being dominated by professional opinion. He thought all conunonseuso men, such as he claimed to he!, should give professional men consideration but should also use their own commonsenso. The motion was carried.
