The chairman (Mr Marfeil) said ho desired to express to mem bars his thanks for the courteous and kindly manner in which they im 1 asr-isred him since ho had been rn iho chair. I - 'orsrmally he did not thi.i.c lie was the.; right man in the right place, hut ho had done as well as he cc old. idr Mai alianfc said that as perhaps the oldest member of tire Board he. could not allow the occasion to pass without expressing his ad mom turn—and he thought it was the opinion ni ail members—at the manner in which the chairman had parried nut Iris duties. Air .Maxwell said lie had to thank th.e present chairman and the past chairimm not only for their courtesy to mem hers but also for the solid interest which they had manifested in the affairs of the Board. Neither gentleman had became chairman merei-/ to enjoy the honour attaching to the position. Ho could go further th.au that and say that the whole of I the members of the Board wore, inspired with a spirit similar to Messrs .Marfell and Marcliaut. ITo spoke as he did because in a newspaper it had been stated that the present members of the Board wore not fit to sdoiul the ratepayers’ money. He thought they had all desired to reply •to that statement hut nobody had j done so. Since then the actions of the Board had proved that they were quite capable of properly looking after the money of the ratepayers. The balance-sheet of the Board’s affai.s
for the year in date proved conclusively that tlio institution had been coonomicaily carried on. Tho Board deserved to lie congratulated on tho fact that though when they took office they found tho hospital in a stormy, condition they were leaving it in a peaceful state and performing its duty without complaint from anybody.
